Standing as Sentinels

In the April 2008 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we had the incredible opportunity to sustain Thomas S. Monson as the new president of the church after the passing of Gordon B. Hinckley.  Oh how I loved and adored President Hinckley; and over the following 10 years I grew to love President Monson just as much!

As I had been working on a pencil sketch of the First Presidency with President Monson as the prophet I remember hearing an incredible talk that reinforced to me the idea of having a picture of these incredible men hanging in our own home (which occasionally I wondering if it seemed odd to friends that would walk into my home and see President Hinckley and his counselors).  The talk entitled “Three Presiding High Priests” by Elder William R. Walker of the First Quorum of the Seventy said in part:

“I first learned the importance of the First Presidency as a boy growing up in Western Canada. When I would go to Grandma and Grandpa Walker’s home, I was greeted in the entry by a framed photo of the First Presidency of the Church. I remember it well. It seemed that they stood as sentinels, greeting all who entered.

The beautiful color photo was of President George Albert Smith with his counselors J. Reuben Clark Jr. and David O. McKay. The photo showed them standing together by a large world globe. I loved the picture. They were such handsome and dignified men; I knew them as the prophet of God and his counselors.

That picture hanging in the front foyer of my grandparents’ home had a powerful influence on me. I lived in the small prairie town of Raymond, where my grandparents lived. I could walk to their home, so I visited often. I remember frequently standing quietly alone in the foyer, reverently looking at that picture of the First Presidency. I remember thinking about why my grandparents thought it was so important to honor the First Presidency and have that picture prominently displayed in their home. All who entered would see it. Perhaps most importantly, for their children and grandchildren it was a constant reminder of what was deeply important in the hearts and lives of Grandma and Grandpa.

Years later I concluded that displaying the picture of the First Presidency was equivalent to Joshua’s beautiful expression: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve; … as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).”

I really loved this talk and the thought of having God’s prophets standing as sentinels in my home.  I have now done my third pencil sketch of the First Presidency as Russell M. Nelson has succeeded President Monson.  I’ve created a page where you can purchase prints for your own home if you’d like to have them, just follow the link here:

Just this morning I received this note from a friend ShaeLee that I’d given some prints to before receiving permission from the church to sell them.  “…I framed and hung up the pictures you gave me and I LOVE them so much…”  and a while back I received a wonderful card in the mail and a TXT message from a dear friend, Bruce Riter that was able to help his mom Marlyn get her print framed. It brings me great happiness to see the pictures being enjoyed and “standing as sentinels” in so many homes.

My Cousin Joshua

Over five years ago my aunt Stacy contacted me and said that my cousin Joshua Polson was not doing well and wasn’t expected to live much longer.  Josh was born with cerebral palsy and had been fighting the good fight for nearly 27 years when she called.  Stacy wanted to do something nice for her sister, Danene (Josh’s mom) and asked if I’d be able to draw a picture of Jesus holding Josh in Heaven that she’d be able to give to her when he passed away, as a way to offer comfort.

She had something in mind similar to this image by Danny Hahlbohm.

Suffer The Children - Danny Hahlbohm  Suffer the Children – By Danny Hahlbom

I told her I’d do my best.  I didn’t have a lot of images to work with so I needed a little help with a model and asked a close neighbor and friend, TJ Haws if I could come take pictures of him and his son Jaxson that was also born with cerebral palsy.  On September 24th, 2014 I had a great time at the Haws’ house snapping photos I was hoping to use for reference.

IMG_8134

I got together a number of different references to work with, taking screenshots from the Bible Videos produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, some other artwork and a few pictures of Josh.  While I was doing so, I also discovered it was pretty neat how similar the names Joshua and Jehovah are in Hebrew.

Joshua

Two days later on September 26th, 2014, Josh passed away.

I don’t recall the exact time frames on everything, but interestingly enough Danene had also gotten ahold of me herself and said she really wanted me to draw a picture of Joshua for her.  She had in mind a picture of him standing in his wheelchair reaching toward Heaven.  She had seen a photo of a bronze sculpture for Matthew Robison and asked if there was any way to do something similar for Josh’s headstone, but she didn’t want it to be exactly like this statue as Josh’s wheelchair was different.

She sent me family photos and a picture of his wheelchair to work from.

I put the request from Stacy on hold and started working on Danene’s picture first.  Chronologically it made more sense to me that Joshua would be standing in his chair reaching for Heaven before he actually got there and was able to meet the Savior, so I figured Stacy would understand.

After an incredibly personal experience involving many late nights, text messages and e-mails to Danene I finished the drawing.  I actually used his brother as a reference for his lower body, and an image I’d found online as reference for the hand of Christ:

Josh Drawn 8.5x11

I really wanted to be able to go personally to the funeral and deliver the drawing but for one reason or another I wasn’t able to so I scanned it and sent the file to my brother Brendon to have printed in Texas.  Brendon saved the day and was able to deliver the picture to Danene in Austin in time for the funeral as he was living in Waco at the time.

I had told Danene that if she really wanted a bronze statue it would likely cost as much as a new car so I gave her a different option for engraving on granite and Brendon was later able to use the pencil sketch to have it laser-etched on Josh’s headstone.  The base is extra long so his headstone can be between his parents’ in the future (but Danene was not ready to see her name in a cemetery!).

Josh'sHeadstone

After I got that finished up I started again on the picture of Josh with Jesus, but it just didn’t seem right to me that Christ would be holding him.  At 27-years-old I figured their meeting would be much more “adult” and would be more of a conversation between friends than anything else.  I asked Danene if it would be okay to draw them up sitting together on a bench.  We spoke of what he’d likely be wearing and decided in all of the accounts we’ve read about angelic visits they’ve been clothed in white robes.

For my reference of Christ I used one of my favorites images by Del Parson of Christ with Mary and Martha.jesus-with-mary-martha-39572-tablet

For Joshua, I did a number of different versions of his head and face, not ever getting it quite right.  Originally Danene requested that we draw Josh to look like his perfected body will look like.  There were a number of times that I thought I had finished, especially this version. Jehovah and Joshua

I was so excited to deliver this to Danene and just happened to be taking a business trip to Dallas so I schedule a detour to Austin.  Unfortunately, upon arriving at DFW I realized I had left my drawing pad in Denver waiting at the gate at DIA.  LUCKILY they were able to find it and ship it back to me, but by then I had missed my chance to deliver this in person.  I took it as a sign that it wasn’t quite right and still needed some work.  I can only imagine the journey the picture had to take to find its way back to me, and who must have seen it along the way?

Not knowing exactly what he should look like, it took me WAY TOO LONG to get this done, but here we are, five years later and I finally finished.

Jehovah and Joshua - FINAL

I was able to send the picture off to Danene and was so excited to receive her reply:

“I received my mail about 15 minutes ago. I had two packages that came today. One was for Russ and the other one I thought might be a game that I bought for the grands. I thought, wow, this is a bigger game then I thought it was going to be. As I opened it up, I was so surprised to see it was a package from you. I didn’t think it would come this early so I was somewhat taken back. As I opened up the envelope, just praying that they didn’t bend it. As I pulled away the paper to find the picture, I was almost holding my breathe as to finally see the final product of your God given talent. When I finally saw the picture the tears just came without realizing what this picture would mean to me. I am not even sure that I can put into words how this makes me feel, Cameron. I truly don’t expect anyone really to understand the meaning of what the two pictures mean to me. It almost gives me some sense of closure to some degree. Just by seeing the picture of Joshua sitting with our Savior just brings tears to my eyes. Oh yes, as I am typing this up the tears are just flowing down my cheeks. My heart is so full and the happiness that you have given me can not even be put into words. These pictures are a priceless gift and I will NEVER be able to thank you enough for what you have done. I have probably caused you a lot of stress for making it more difficult for you when a few times you thought you had it and I kept telling you to make a few changes. However, I think I am glad I did that because this is the Joshua I know. I don’t know the one who is now perfect and I had no right to ask you to do something that is just impossible to do since none of us know what we will truly be like once we get to Heaven. I just wish that I could truly explain to you how my heart feels right now. I wish Russ was home so that he could hang this up for me so that the two pictures can now be placed together where they belong. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. I love you with all my heart. Thank you for just doing something for me that no one else could have done for me.”

It made me smile when she mentioned the size and praying it didn’t get bent, because while I was at the shipping company I had the very thought that I needed to protect it even more.  After I’d already packaged it in a bubble mailer I then put it in a larger box to protect it from bending.  It amazes me that God knows us well enough to answer our prayers often before we even ask them!  He’s always listening, it’s often up to us to do the same thing.

Danene was later able to send me pictures of the drawings framed on her wall.  When we had gone to visit her (hoping originally to deliver the drawing in person) she showed us the first drawing I’d done and where the other one would end up.  It’s nice to see that they are finally paired together.

When I was asking Danene for her permission to post this she asked, “Did I ever tell you why I called and asked you to do this picture for us? There is a little story behind it.”

So, again with her permission I share with you the story she related to me.  I hope it can help build your faith in a loving Heavenly Father that knows each of His children by name and uses a heavenly host of angels to minister to us personally.

“I had many wonderful experiences before Joshua died. I felt as though the Lord was truly very much aware of me and I knew without any doubt that He was aware of the pain I was going through. One day I was leaving my craft room to go into the family room where Joshua lay in his hospital bed. I had only taken a few steps and I felt this presence on my left side, it was like someone was walking with me. There was no doubt in my mind that my guardian angel was right there by me. I knew better then to look over to my left side because I knew that if I did that they would leave and even though I didn’t look, that wonderful feeling left me and that disappointed me but if for no other reason, it made me realize that the Lord knew He needed to send me my guardian angel that day.

You see, I was told in a blessing by our stake Patriarch, (Justin’s father-in-law) that while we went through those last several weeks with Joshua, that the Lord would send me guardian angels to help me. I had this feeling one day during this time that we needed to go and make arrangements for Joshua’s death. When I told Russ about this he said that he didn’t think that we needed to do this yet but I told him that I just had this feeling that we needed to do it now. I didn’t want to wait until it got closer to Joshua’s death. I had heard too many stories of people waiting and the problems they had. I learned a long time ago that I don’t do well with procrastinating so I decided to do it now and get that very difficult day out of the way. I made arrangements with two of my friends to come and sit with Joshua so we could go.

As we began to talk to the person at the funeral home, he was talking about headstones. I told him that I already had an idea of what I wanted but I didn’t know if it was possible. I had told him of a picture I had come across of a headstone that was in the Salt Lake City cemetery. I showed him a picture of it. He looked at it and then looked at me and he said that this would be very expensive to do and the guesstimate he gave me made my eyes pop out. Right then I knew that what I wanted would never be realized for Joshua’s headstone. He told me, however, if you give me a picture of Joshua, he could have the man that worked there sandblast it on the headstone for us. Right then, I heard this voice in my head, it was as clear as anyone talking to me directly say, “call Cameron”. I thought to myself, “why would I call Cameron?” Then it dawned on me, Cameron is an artist. I told the man helping us that I had a nephew that was an artist and I would contact him to see if he could draw a picture for us and I would get back to him. I think it was that night after Joshua went to bed and things were quite in the house I sent you my request. I had no idea what that phone call would do for me. You know the rest of the story.”

Danene, thank you for letting me be a part of this journey, and Stacy, I really hope you like the result =)

The First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

I’ve finished my pencil sketch of the First Presidency and sent it off to the intellectual property department of the church to see if I’ll be allowed to sell prints for a few fundraising efforts.  It’s about a 45-day waiting period to hear back, so we’ll see what they say.

In the meantime, I thought I’d share the picture with you along with a scripture.  I believe these three men to be Prophets, Seers and Revelators chosen by God to lead and guide the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to gather scattered Israel and prepare the earth for the triumphant return of Jesus Christ.

We are living in the greatest period of human history and if we live according to the teachings of these and other living prophets and apostles we will become more like Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father, and will in a future day be able to live with them again with our eternal families.  I can’t think of a more worthy endeavor!

UPDATE!!! I’ve been granted permission from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to sell the prints so if you’d like to purchase any please follow this link:

President Henry B. Eyring

It was nice to be able to sit with a Prophet of the Lord on Easter Sunday.  How’d I get to do that?  Well, I spent the majority of the day drawing President Henry B. Eyring =)  It’s the second time I’ve been able to draw him, as I also drew him for President Monson’s Presidency.  So while I didn’t really get to sit with him in person, it was nevertheless very enjoyable to get the chance to draw him.  Here’s a picture of the progress:

Henry B. Eyring

I love President Eyring.  I think he’s amazing and I love to hear him speak.  I find his emotions to be quite familiar with when I get the chance to speak, and have tried to pattern myself after the way he speaks.  I notice how he will calm himself down with his hands on the pulpit.  I want to be more like him!  I hope if he ever sees this picture he’ll be happy with it.

President Dallin H. Oaks

President Dallin H. Oaks

I’ve recently finished my pencil sketch of President Dallin H. Oaks of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I’ve always enjoyed listening to his talks during General Conference and look forward to hearing from him this upcoming weekend. As I worked on the sketch I’d posted images of progress on my Facebook page so I thought I’d post them as a whole here as it’s fun to see how it came along:

President Oaks Progress

Kerry asked if it’s harder to draw someone with hair or a bald head.  I’d definitely say hair is easier, though I think the final product turned out pretty well.  We also got a good laugh out of her telling me the tie didn’t match the suit.  She said you wouldn’t normally wear such a tightly striped tie with a pinstripe suit!  The funny thing is, it’s not his tie.  I always like to switch things up a little bit so he’s actually wearing President Eyring’s tie.  I’ll apologize in advance for the tie not matching, but I’m not going to change it because I’ve always thought it’d be fun to switch the ties on my First Presidency drawings.  It reminds me of being a missionary in Iceland and switching ties with my fellow Elders.  I don’t know if the First Presidency ever does that, but I’d like to think that maybe they do =)  Come to think of it, maybe it IS presidency Oak’s tie, because maybe he switched with President Eyring and now in ironic fashion it’s made its way home 😉

Robin Williams

Nearly 5 years ago we lost one of the greatest comic geniuses of our time.  I loved Robin Williams and to honor his legacy I drew this pencil sketch of him.  I really wanted to focus on the texture of his skin and his wicked crazy body hair.  I titled the image Robin Williams – What a Concept!

Robin Williams - What a Concept

A client of mine, Gem City Memorials was nice enough to engrave the image on a black granite tile as well so I could see what it would look like engraved in stone.

Robin Williams - What A Concept-Etched

This tile does not have any paint applied to it but I did auto-adjust the scan to lighten it up just a little bit.

My sketch was based on this photograph:

screen-shot-2015-08-10-at-8-08-45-pm

Update: I just learned today (7/7/2021) that the photo was taken by Ken Hively https://thegratefulgoober.com/ for the LA Times, so I’m hoping he’s okay with me using his reference photo!  Permission Pending!

Here’s to Firsts at Thirty-Six

Here’s to Firsts at Thirty-Six

Okay, so it’s actually a little over a week before I turn 36, but I figure this will take a while to write and post so I am planning ahead.  I really like to keep track of the Firsts that happen in my life.  It never ceases to amaze me that the older I get, the more firsts I seem to have.  2015 was full of firsts for me and my family.  As an example, this will be my first blog post on my own blog, CameronTM.com, that others will have access to.  In 2008 I registered the domain name CameronTM.com.  Interestingly enough I am usually self-conscious when I hear or say my own name so it was not my first choice of domain names.  However, when I thought of how I needed to be recognized I decided I needed a brand.  I probably shouldn’t say that I decided that myself, I feel more like it was suggested to me subconsciously.  And so I am embracing it.

Breaking down the domain:

Cameron, of course is my name.  TM is twofold. Todd and Moore would be my middle and last names, however TM is also commonly known for Trade Mark.  It is for this reason that I now sign all of my drawings:Signature

I thought it would be important for people who were customers of MemorialDESIGNER to know who the artist was behind the designs.  It is my hope that this blog will be an outlet for that to happen.

I am a fan of Benjamin Franklin.  I believe if Ben were alive today he would have an incredible blog.  I don’t currently follow any blogs myself, but I would have to say that if Benjamin Franklin were alive and blogging I would be one of his followers.  I don’t know that I would have anything myself as worthy of posting as Benjamin would, but it is fun to think that the possibility exists.  What if the words that I write are able to urge and inspire someone else to do better, to be more.

Benjamin Franklin’s words have done this for me.  This is part of the reason that I was able to add a lot more FIRSTS to my list of FIRSTS for 2015.  I was able to visit Philadelphia and go to the grave site of Benjamin Franklin.

IMG_20150601_164659605

But wait, I’m getting a little ahead of myself.  At the end of May and the beginning of June this year my family and I took our FIRST ever cross-country road trip pulling a camper trailer…..

…..I started to type this 3 years ago and obviously never finished, but I’m trying to do better at finishing things I start so I’m going to just go ahead and publish this as-is and go from there =)

First Presidency

Growing up I shared a room with my brother Shelby before he left on his mission to Seattle, Washington.  He loved to draw in high school and would plaster our walls with his artwork.  His half of our room was his personal art gallery floor to ceiling.  I loved to see his pictures and dreamed of being able to someday draw as well as he did.  I remember him drawing a picture of the First Presidency one time that hung on our closet door.

In 1998 while I was a senior in high school a friend of mine, Raymond Rawlings, asked me why I always drew pictures of girls and why I didn’t do something more worthwhile.  I decided I’d give it a shot and see if I could finally draw like Shelby and I couldn’t think of anything more worthwhile than the First Presidency, other than Jesus Christ whom I have yet to feel good enough to do my own drawing of.  I’ve always been pretty good at drawing what I see, but since I’ve yet to see my Savior I haven’t ever endeavored to draw Him.

Here is the drawing I did in 1998 of President Gordon B. Hinckley, President Thomas S. Monson, and President James E. Faust.  President Hinckley's PresidencyAlthough I’d drawn the originals in 1998 it says 2008 on the signature because I edited them a bit when I had the opportunity to do a personal artwork signing at the BYU Bookstore in Provo, Utah.  In highschool I kept them in my backpack in a blue paper folder and one day had a Sprite aluminum can also in my backpack that punctured and leaked all over the pictures.

In 2008 while attending the Eastridge Ward I told the Young Women’s President, Heidi Richey, that I’d draw up the new First Presidency for their fundraiser that year.  President Monson had just been put in as the new prophet, I believe on a Tuesday and the fundraiser was that Friday or Saturday so I didn’t have a lot of time to draw it.  For the fundraiser I ended up having to rush through my drawing of President Uchtdorf.

My brother Tyson served his mission in Frankfurt, Germany where he met and spent time in the home of President Uchtdorf.  He told me that the picture I’d drawn just simply didn’t look like him and wasn’t good enough, so I decided I’d try again.  I’m glad that he said something, because I wasn’t happy with it either, but was thinking of just leaving it as I was lazy and didn’t want to draw anymore.  However, I think the revision is much better and I’m happy with it.

President Uchtdorf Original Number 2

My originals have again since been ruined by spilling something on them!  Luckily I scanned the originals before they got ruined, so this is how they ended up getting laid out together.

First Presidency 8x10

Two Saturday’s ago our ward at church had their annual Young Men / Young Woman Camp Fundraiser and I really wanted to be able to sell some prints so they could raise their needed funds.  It’s become a bit of a tradition for me now to sell prints at the fundraiser, so I was able to put this together for the auction.  Once again, I didn’t give myself enough time to finish all the drawings though so I used the President Eyring from before.  I’m not happy with that so I’m going to redraw him and then I’ll be finished!  As soon as I have him drawn I’ll add them.

First Presidency

President Russell M. Nelson

President Russell M. Nelson

It seems like I’ve been working on drawing President Nelson for a while now, but I’m finally finished.  I took a few photos as I went along to see the progress, so I thought I’d show those here.

President Nelson Progress

I truly believe that President Nelson is God’s prophet on the earth today, to lead and guide us in gathering scattered Israel and preparing the world for Jesus Christ’s return.  This is actually the second time I’ve drawn him.  Unfortunately I didn’t keep the first picture I drew of him, as it was something I did as a fairly young boy.

When I was growing up Elder Nelson came to a Stake Conference to speak and we were sitting close enough and in the middle of the pews so I was able to sit and sketch him while he spoke.  I’m certain it wasn’t the best, but I very much enjoyed doing so and it made an impression on my young mind that he was truly an Apostle of the Lord.  I think this was first time in my life that I can ever recall receiving an Apostolic blessing.

Over the past year as I’ve been working on this sketch I’ve had the opportunity to sit quietly and ponder on the truths this man has taught as I’ve looked into his eyes and drawn every wrinkle that speaks volumes of his nearly 95 years of life experience.President Nelson 300 dpi
